On a side street in Covent Garden stands an imposing palazzo-style building, strangely out of place amid the burger joints and neon marquees of London’s theater district. It houses the Garrick Club, one of Britain’s oldest men’s clubs, and on any given weekday, a lunch table in its baronial dining room is one of the hottest tickets in town. A visitor lucky enough to cadge an invitation from a member might end up in the company of a Supreme Court justice, the master of an Oxford college or the editor of a London newspaper. Women are excluded from membership in the Garrick and permitted only as guests, a long-simmering source of tension that has recently erupted into a full-blown furor. Mr. Moore’s membership seemed at odds with his efforts to bring more racial and gender diversity to the British spy agency, known as MI6.

The report highlights the numerous human rights violations that have occurred as a result of mining activity. The mine is operated by Compagnie Minière de Musonoie Global SAS, or COMMUS, a joint venture between Chinese company Zijin Mining and the state-owned Gecamines mining company. Often there was no grievance mechanism, accountability, or access to justice.”Amnesty International says companies are not doing enough to address human rights concerns and are disregarding international human rights laws and standards, as well as national legislation and U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Decarbonizing the global economy must not lead to further human rights violations,” it said.

Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) last week agreed to engage in talks through arbitration to resolve the months-long pay dispute and on Sunday the CWU withdrew its planned strike action in Britain in the next two weeks. Royal Mail's latest offer includes a 7% salary increase over two years, plus a lump sum payment of 2% of pay this year, but was subject to CWU agreeing to several changes including to Sunday working, start times and flexible working. The CWU, which represents more than 115,000 postal workers at Royal Mail, rejected the offer and said it would vote to take further strike action. "It (the offer) includes more unacceptable changes and a derisory 7% two-year pay offer that is well below projected inflation for both years," the CWU said in a statement. HONG KONG, Oct 13 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Leaders from the West’s biggest financial firms will land in Hong Kong next month — in most cases their first trip to the city in three years — with some tough questions for their hosts. They arrive amid the worst U.S.-Sino ties in decades, with Hong Kong unhappily stuck in the middle, bringing frustration for companies who have invested much capital and time in the country. Investment banking fees have dried up everywhere, but it’s particularly bad in mainland China and Hong Kong. Hong Kong has been a big beneficiary of their ambitions.
